Pensacola Electrical GNJ Apprenticeship College
The Pensacola Electrical GNJ Apprenticeship College is accredited and VA approved and consists of four years of on-the-job training and related classroom study. Apprentices are expected to complete at least 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of related classroom study per year. The apprentice works for a participating contractor during the day and attends school one night a week for four hours. Out-of-town apprentices do their classwork through correspondence.
The job of an electrician is to plan layouts, install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment. They plan new modified installations to minimize waste materials, provide access for future maintenance and avoid unsightly hazardous and unreliable wiring consistent with specifications and local electrical code. They will prepare sketches showing locations of wiring and equipment or follow diagrams or blueprints ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before the completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring. They will also learn to measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install electrical conduit.
You must be at least 18 years of age and have either a high school diploma or GED to apply to the program.
Wages of the apprentice will vary from time to time depending on out-of-town work or on a Davis Bacon job compared to local work. For area work, the pay schedule is based on a minimum pay scale, approved by the Florida Department of Labor, and is currently based on the average entry-level journeyman wage of $ 20.00 per hour. Below is the scale per six (6) month period:
1st six months 67% $ 13.40 5th six months 80% $ 16.00
2nd six months 70% $ 14.00 6th six months 85% $ 17.00
3rd six months 75% $ 15.00 7th six months 90% $ 18.00
4th six months 78% $ 15.60 8th six months 95% $ 19.00
Journeyman $ 20.00
This wage scale is for non-Davis Bacon work only. Apprentices cannot be paid any less than the approved scale.
Credit may be allowed for verified past field experience. Transfers from other approved apprenticeship programs must provide their records to receive credit.
