What is Take Stock in Children?

  • Take Stock in Children is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships, mentorship, and hope to financially eligible students. Operated locally through the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation, our program pairs each scholar with a mentor, equips them with college readiness tools, and surrounds them with a community of support. In return, students commit to strong academics, consistent attendance, positive citizenship, and remaining drug- and crime-free. Upon graduation, they are rewarded with a four-year postsecondary scholarship.

How are Students Selected?

  • Student applications are first reviewed by their guidance counselors and then forwarded to the Take Stock in Children selection committee for final decisions. The number of students chosen each year depends on the availability of donated scholarships.

Where Do Scholarships Come From?

  • Scholarships are made possible through generous donations from local businesses, foundations, community organizations, and individuals. Every dollar contributed is matched dollar-for-dollar by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, doubling the impact for our students.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

  • The scholarship covers four years of tuition and local fees at the Florida state college rate. Funds may also be applied toward vocational training programs or used to offset tuition costs at a university.

How Many Students are in the Program?

  • Currently, there are 193 Take Stock Scholars in grades 7-12. There are 145 students currently in college using their Take Stock Scholarship and to date, we have had 190 post-secondary completions, including Associate’s, Bachelor’s Master’s and PhDs.
